Design Process

1. Discovery & Analysis

Discuss clients goals, special requirements, project budget and design aesthetics to determine the scope of work and understand the client's vision. Onsite inspection is scheduled with clients. During the inspection we will analyze the site, and discuss potential areas of improvement with the clients preferences in mind.

2. Concept Design

Create concept diagrams illustrating general locations and relationships between all existing and proposed landscape elements. These studies examine how the spaces relate to each other and to the site. Review all codes, current entitlements, conditions of approval that pertain to the development of the site. Identify preferred concepts.

3. Schematic Design

Create a Preliminary Landscape Plan, Conceptual Landscape Plan, or Master Plan based  on the preferred concepts. This plan will show:

  • Conceptual grading and drainage indicating retaining walls, steps, berms, swales, and storm-water management systems.

  • Pedestrian and auto circulation, with suggested materials.

  • Planting areas by type of plant such as shrub, tree, ground cover, and  perennial. Multiple plant species for each type of plant will be suggested, but final selections, quantities, and container sizes will not be indicated at this point.

  • Conceptual landscape lighting and electrical connections.

4. Design Development
& Construction Docs

Investigate materials and systems options and prepare design details and plans for  construction. If a building permit is required for your project, the plans will generally be  developed to this level of detail. This phase is where the unique character of each project  comes out. Plans may include:

• Proposed Site Plan

• Grading and Drainage Plan

• Hardscape Layout Plan: shows dimensioned layout and specific materials and paving patterns, and includes cross sections and elevations.

• Planting Plan: indicates the locations, species, quantities, and container sizes of  specific plants.

• Irrigation Plan

• Exterior Lighting and Electrical Plan

• Construction Details

5. Project Management
& Installation

Provide project management services to facilitate construction, respond to requests for clarification, address unforeseen design issues, review and approve hardscape and planting layout, and observe the quality of workmanship and materials. Working closely with contractors, coordinating construction processes and ensuring compliance with design intent.

6. Maintenance
& Observation

Prepare a Landscape Maintenance Manual indicating recommended on-going and recurring tasks. Ensure long-term success by periodically visiting the project after construction to make sure all systems are working well and plants are thriving; make recommendations as needed. Now it's time for Champagne! Sit back and enjoy your beautiful new space.
